Forebay

Privacy

Forebay counts its installs, and that is all it reports. Your studies and their results stay on your computer.

The install count

The first time Forebay runs on a computer it sends one short message to stats.syncster.dev, a service we run, and one more the first time it runs after its version has changed. That is how we know how many copies are in use and which versions they are. It is always sent; there is no setting for it, because it holds nothing about you. The message says:

WhatFor exampleWhy
A random installation id3f0c8a52-91d4-4c1e-8b7a-5d2e6f104b99To count each copy once
Forebay's version0.1.1To tell an install from an update, and see which versions are in use
The operating systemmacosTo know which systems to build for
The processor's architecturearm64The same
For an update, the version before0.1.0To see updates arriving

The id is made of random digits on Forebay's first run. Nothing about you or your computer goes into it, so it isn't tied to a person: it only tells one copy of Forebay from another. It is kept, with the last version reported, in the file stats.json in Forebay's data folder (~/Library/Application Support/Forebay); delete the file and the next start counts as a new install.

The service stores those values and the time the message arrived. It does not store the network address the message came from with them.

What is never sent

  • Your studies: the reservoir, the inflow record, the demands, the results or the reports
  • File names, folder names or paths
  • Your name, email address, user name or computer name
  • What you do in Forebay: no usage tracking, no crash reports

Forebay has no accounts, shows no ads, and nothing is sold or shared.

On your computer

  • A study is saved as a .forebay file, and a report, a figure or a table is exported, only when you ask, and only to the place you pick.
  • Inflow records are read from the files you import or drop on the window, or from the clipboard when you press Paste.
  • The names and places of the last ten studies you opened or saved are kept for File > Open Recent, in recent.json in the same data folder. Delete the file to clear the list.

The download count

Pressing the download button on this website tells the same service that Forebay was downloaded: the product, the version and the system it is for (macOS or Windows). Nothing about you is in it, and there are no cookies. The website is hosted on Netlify and the download is served from Google Cloud Storage; like any web host, they see the network address a request comes from, under their own terms.

Other connections

There are none. Forebay doesn't look for updates by itself: new versions are on this website.

Ads on this website

This website shows ads from Google AdSense; Forebay itself shows none. To choose and count the ads, Google and its partners set cookies in your browser and may show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. Google explains this in How Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can turn off personalised ads in My Ad Center, or block the cookies in your browser; the website works the same without them.
